Verisign Whois Lookup Behaving Strange

Update: The problem seems to have been fixed.

Whois lookups from the verisign registry is behaving strange right now. Lookups for many domain names show up with a

No match for domain ….

If the lookup is repeated again, it returns the valid data.

This happens with the port 43 whois and on Verisign’s own web interface. Here are two screen grabs

Lookup for (at verisign’s own web interface) shows the domain is not registered.
A new lookup a few seconds later works!

Currently the only solution is to sort the domains and do a lookup again on domains that show up as “free”.

Hopefully, this will get fixed very soon.

NameCheap has also reported this.

New Version of Domain Name Filter

We have released a new version of the free Domain Name Filter. The improvements include a better interface and additional options. We are also planning to add more features to it in the coming weeks.

You need this software if you work with large lists of domain names. Most of the expired domain lists are huge with reasonably good names sprinkled among large number of useless names. Domain Name Filter will allow you to pick the ones you want from such lists.

Registry Supported High Speed Domain Availability Whois Lookups (AU, NL, EU)

Some registries support high speed domain availability lookups. These are are not rigorously monitored for high volume (ab)use. The downside is that these whois lookups are suitable only for domain availability checks.

You can configure all of our domain name management / search software tools to make use of the high speed availability lookups.

The above screen-shot shows the configuration required for AU domain lookups. Please remember to change these back to normal settings if you want to do regular whois settings. So, it is a good idea to note down the earlier settings before you make any changes.

You can adjust the ‘max connections’ and ‘connection interval’ so that the lookups occur at higher speeds.

The following articles explain the settings in more detail.
