Importing Data into Watch My Domains SED v4 from the Previous Version

Watch My Domains SED v4 (RC02 and above) supports importing data from the previous v3.

It is very important to use a different database when installing Watch My Domains SED v4. Please do not reuse the v3 database. It will corrupt the data and make it unusable from both versions.

If you can’t use a different database, change the ‘table prefix’ entry for Watch My Domains SED v4 so that new tables are created.

Importing data from v3 is very similar to importing data from registrars. Create a data source profile in the administration panel and the use the ‘Add Domains’ option as usual.

You will need to provide the database access details of the version 3 installation. Please see here for more details.

Selecting Database Server in Watch My Domains SED 4

The first release candidate for Watch My Domains SED v4 is now available for download.

Watch My Domains SED v4 supports multiple databases for storage. You can select from …

  • MySQL / Maria DB
  • Oracle Database
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • PostgreSQL
  • SQLite

You can select the database type in config.php.

Selecting database type

The Professional edition License is required for MS SQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle. The demo / evaluation version supports all databases. However, the application will not be able to access the data if you test or evaluate with Oracle, PostgreSQL or SQL server and then purchase and activate the basic or standard editions.

Track New Domains That Contain Trademarks or Keywords

Watch My Domains SED v4 Professional Edition supports monitoring for new domains that contain specific keywords.

This simply involves entering two extra API keys that are available to Professional Edition users and then specifying the keywords you want to monitor.

You can use % to specify keyword position. For example, enter %apple to monitor domains ending in apple, apple to monitor domains that contain apple and apple% to find domains that start with apple.

A daily report will be created and emailed to specified address. You can also view the data on screen or add it to the application domain list.

Creating Users in Watch My Domains SED v4

Watch My Domains SED v4 (beta) has a number of additional options for user administration that are not available in the current version 3.

(The user administration features are available only in standard edition and above)

Allow All Categories

One of the problems in version 3 was that the domain categories had to be individually enabled for each user. The new version has an extra user rights option to enable access to all categories for a user. If you set this option on for any user he/she will have access to all categories including ones that will be created in future.

This option is different from giving the user access to all existing categories by checking the corresponding category name boxes in the ‘categories’ list.

Access Levels

Access levels allow you to prevent certain users from ever accessing data from specific columns. For example, only users who have access level of 5 and above will be able to access columns that have access level 5. It is better to set all your users to access level 0 (minimum access level) by default.

Other Options

In addition to the above features there are extra user right flags that allow users to download data, make changes to UI, trigger lookups, allow editing categories / auto queries etc.

Watch My Domains SED v4 and User Access Levels

Did you know that you can precisely control which columns a user can view in Watch My Domains SED v4 ?

You can specify an access level (from 0-8) to every domain data column in Watch My Domains SED v4. You can also specify an access level to every user. Columns with level-0 can be accessed by all users, but columns with higher access levels can only be accessed by users with the same or higher access levels.

All administrative users have a default access level of 24, which means they can access all columns. It is possible to use the API to expand the access levels to 32 instead of the default 0-8 supported by the user administration interface.

Watch My Domains SED v4, Command Line Tool

Watch My Domains SED v4 includes a command line tool that can be used to manage the database, check email settings and reports etc. This will be expanded in future to include additional features.

The tool is available as sed.php in the root folder. Run

php sed.php

to see the available options.

For example,

php sed.php list=tables

will list all the tables in the database.

php sed.php mailtest=contact@example.com

will run an email test if you have configured the email settings in the interface.

Reports in Watch My Domains SED v4

The reports module in new Watch My Domains SED v4 (currently beta) allows you to combine domain data columns, DNS records and SSL data into the same table, sort them in any order you want and then create HTML and CSV reports.

Watch My Domains SED has a set of important reports already pre-configured. You can create any number of additional reports on your own using the administration module.

Creating and Configuring Reports (Admin Module)

You can download Watch My Domains SED v4 beta from here. A user guide (under development) is also available. This is being updated.

Status Report: Watch My Domains SED v4

The first public beta version will be available for download on February 27, 2018

It has been a while since we announced our plans to release Watch My Domains SED v4. Our original plan was to release it in late 2018. Unfortunately we didn’t account for the large number of tests we had to do on a version that is around 3-4 times bigger.

Version 4 has an extremely large number of new features, add to this the code rewrites and we are left with a huge number of unit, integration, system and user interface tests. We also decided to create a comprehensive Application Programming Interface and use only the API for the user interface. This required even more tests.

We also revised some user interface elements after obtaining feedback from some of our corporate customers.

The good news is that we are extremely happy with how this version is shaping up and we hope to have the first release candidate ready by the third week of January.

What’s New in V4

Here are some of the important improvements:

  • Support for multiple database back-ends (Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, SQLite)
  • Support for importing and Looking up Domains using registrar APIs (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Dynadot, etc.)
  • Support for Importing Data from DNS Providers like DNSMadeEasy
  • Control over who can see each data column. You can now define access levels for each data column and specify which user can view the columns.
  • Full control over lookup and report scheduling from the user interface. There is no need to add additional cron-jobs to control lookups or generate reports.
  • Create Reports in HTML, PDF or CSV formats.
  • Complete control over color schemes and fonts.
  • Vastly improved user interface.
  • Multiple authentication options including SAML / SSO.

Here are some screen shots.
